Won Two Titles Anyway
Komana Vidyalaya sits in Padiyathalawa, within the Mahaoya education zone of Ampara District, officially classified as one of the zone’s most under-resourced schools. It is not a place where a sports program is expected to compete for anything. At the 2026 Mahaoya zonal volleyball tournament, Komana’s boys’ teams won both the Under-16 and Under-18 championships. They did it without proper shoes, uniforms, or any of the basic training equipment a competitive program relies on.
That win put a new goal in reach: the upcoming Eastern Province tournament, where a title would qualify the team for the national championship. When word of the team’s situation reached Umbria Api Sri Lankan Unity, the group reached out directly to Komana Vidyalaya’s principal and sports coordinator to find out exactly what the team needed to train properly.
On 13 June 2026, a representative of Umbria Api Sri Lankan Unity, Major Harsha Weerasooriya, delivered a full set of volleyball training equipment from leading sports brands, covering everything the coaching staff had requested, in person to the principal, the sports coordinator, and the students of Ampara / Mahaoya / Komana Vidyalaya.
“Umbriya Api has today donated 20 volleyball training kits, including knee guards. We’re so grateful for everything you’ve done to help our children, equipment like this is very hard to come by here. I bless you all for this kind gesture.”

Schools like it exist across Sri Lanka, facing the same kind of hardship, and it goes well beyond sports. Many are dealing with a daily lack of clean water, toilet facilities, sanitary supplies, and basic school equipment of every kind.
